NB&A Investigates Salmonella Illnesses In Wake of Papaya Recall

The foodborne illness lawyers at Neblett, Beard & Arsenault are investigating a multistate Salmonella Agona outbreak.  So far, nearly 100 people in 23 states have reportedly become ill with symptoms associated with Salmonellosis.  10 people have been hospitalized. So far, illnesses have been reported in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. The recalled papayas were distributed throughout the United States and Canada.

The FDA is warning consumers not to eat papayas from Agromod Produce, a distributor in McAllen, TX.  Late last week, Agromond recalled all Blondie, Yaya, Manaita and Tastylicious Brand papayas sold prior to July 23, 2011.  The papayas were imported to the United States from Mexico. Sampling done by the FDA found the Salmonella outbreak strain in two papayas collected at Agromond’s McAllen location.

Salmonella can cause a serious and potentially fatal form of foodborne illness.  Most Salmonella victims will begin to exhibit symptoms within 12-72 hours after consuming a Salmonella-tainted product. Salmonellosis symptoms can include cramping, diarrhea (sometimes severe and/or bloody), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever.  In severe cases of Salmonellosis, hospitalization may be required.  The elderly, the very young, and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk for developing serious complications from Salmonella poisoning.

Our foodborne illness lawyers are investigating the possible link between the recalled papayas and the national Salmonella Agona outbreak.  If you need additional information about our investatigation, please contact us.
