CDC Issues Final Report on Salmonella Typhimurium Outbreak Linked to Ground Beef at Hannaford Supermarkets
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued their final investigative report into the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak which was linked to ground beef sold at Hannaford Stores in Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New york, and Vermont. In all, twenty individuals contracted Salmonella. The CDC has stated that it feels that this outbreak is finished. The following are highlights about the investigation as posted on the CDC’s webpage.
  • A total of 20 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium were reported from 7 states
  • The number of ill persons identified in each state was as follows: HI (1), KY (1), MA (1), ME (4), NH (6), NY (6), and VT (1).
  • Collaborative investigative efforts of state, local, and federal public health and regulatory agencies indicated that this outbreak was linked to eating ground beef purchased from Hannaford Supermarkets.
  • This particular outbreak appears to be over. However, Salmonella is still an important cause of human illness in the United States.
