Supplements and Shake Mixes Recalled Due to Potential Salmonella from Plainview Milk

Plainview Milk Products Recall: SalmonellaDietary supplements and shake mixes are the latest casualties in the Plainview Milk recall due to Salmonella tainted dried milk products. Here are five more Plainview Milk related recall alerts, all due to possible Salmonella contamination.

July 7, 2009 – Trans-Packers Services Corp. of Brooklyn, NY, is recalling approximately 6,300 packets (net wt. 100 g) of Dairy Shake blends because such blends contain instant non-fat dry milk manufactured by the Plainview Milk Products Cooperative.  Plainview has recently commenced a voluntary recall of instant non-fat dry milk and other ingredients that have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.  Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.  In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Trans-Packers has not received any reports of illness related to the Dairy Shake blend.  The product affected by this recall includes single-serve packets of Dairy Shake blend packaged in a preformed barrier pouch, which were distributed through Emergency Essentials, Inc. and Saratoga Trading Company located in Orem, Bluffdale and Saratoga Springs, Utah. 

The particular blends and affected lot numbers are:

* 6,000 packets of Strawberry/Banana Flavor Dairy Shake lot # 8324,
* 200 packets of Vanilla Flavor Dairy Shake lot # 9132 and
* 100 packets of Strawberry Dairy Shake lot # 7225.

Consumers who have any of the Dairy Shake blends from the affected lot numbers should not consume the product; and are urged to destroy such product.

July8, 2009 – Lewis Laboratories International, Ltd. is voluntarily recalling Weigh Down Chocolate Flavor Nutrition Drink Mix as a precautionary measure, Lot Numbers: 170C110 Best By Date 12/16/2011, 170C111 Best By Date 03/12/2012, 170C112 Best By Date 4/28/2012 and 170C113 Best By Date 6/5/2012 – Net Wt. 16 oz. (454 grams) >because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.The product was distributed to one distributor in NY and sold mail order through the Internet. 

The product should not be used or consumed. Consumers who have any of the product are urged to destroy it. Lewis Laboratories has not received any notification of consumer illness associated with the consumption of its product.

The recall was initiated when Lewis Laboratories was notified by its supplier, that the product contained an ingredient supplied by Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, which has issued a voluntary recall on the non-fat dried milk and whey protein because of the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella

Lewis Laboratories International, Ltd., says it expects to resume sales shortly.

The UPC is 1076482486 for the Stealth Chocolate (5 lb), 1076482484 for the Vanilla Stealth (5 lb), 1076482498 for the Stealth Chocolate (75g) and 1076482496 for the Stealth Vanilla (75 g).

Stealth Vanilla and Stealth Chocolate was distributed Nationwide, including GNC Distribution Centers in Phoenix AZ; in Anderson, SC; and in Leetsdale, PA; and to VPX Sports Distribution Center in Weston, Fl; as well as Internationally.

The powdered product is packaged in 5lb blue, plastic jars with red band on around the top and bottom of the jar. The principal label bears the brand name of VPX and STEALTH, Muscle Amplification Lean Mass Gainer and the flavor in the lower 1/3; Vanilla Blast or Chocolate Rush. The production code and the expiration date are imprinted on the side panel above the Supplement Facts. The powdered product was also packaged in foil pouches as samples.

Anaheim, CA – July 3, 2009 – Max Muscle Sports Nutrition has issued a voluntary recall for Max Muscle products containing whey protein concentrate due to potential Salmonella contamination. This is an extension of the voluntary recall being conducted by one of the company’s suppliers, Plainview Milk Products Cooperative.Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.  Max Muscle has not received any reports of illness related to the whey protein concentrate.

The products being recalled include 7 products and 101 lots. The products in question were manufactured in January and February of 2009, and distributed nationwide beginning in January of 2009. Only the products and lot numbers listed in the table below.

Max Muscle has provided information on the voluntary recall to its Chain of Franchises and retail customers nationwide who purchased the specific lots regarding this voluntary recall via fax, phone or mail. Max Muscle has notified the FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

Customers are advised not to consume any of these products and should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
